(Photo: Shelley Glover participating in one of her favorite sports--swimming.) The Shelley Glover Pool Fund The Shelley Glover Pool Fund, established in 2004 through the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools (FMPS) provides access to swimming lessons and swim team through scholarships to assist low income children in the community. Because of the generosity and collaboration of the many thoughtful, committed individuals who provide financial donations as well as time, the fund continues to grow. In 2006, Kids Swimming for Kids was added as a way for young swimmers who are blessed with summer pool fun to swim for low income kids who currently don't have access to a pool and lessons. Each year, through the commitment of pool parents and coaches, kids swim laps for dollars as a way to add to the scholarship fund. Through this event kids develop a sense of community focus and take pride in participation. We hope to involve all private pools in this very rewarding annual half day event. Shelley wished most of all for sport to provide family fun, time with friends and the fitness and self discipline that support the development of self esteem. Learning to swim also leads to water safety reducing drowning in the very high risk underserved population. Shelley was a gifted athlete focusing her efforts as early as age three on swimming, soccer and ski racing. Shelley, a former Shorewood swimmer, an Olympic development team soccer player, and at age of 15 a member of the United States Ski Team, died following a ski training accident in May 2004 at 17. While attending Lincoln elementary school Shelley was quite aware of the disparity in kid's access to sports. Shelley's dream was to provide access for all children to participate in sport. Shelley so enjoyed the fun, family involvement and camaraderie that sport provided. For more information please contact www.fmps.org, 608-232-7820 |
